Alternately quiet and contemplative or flirty and obnoxious, Kira's a mysterious, self-contradictory -- even hypocritical -- being. He's highly intelligent and enjoys books and learning. Though friendly to almost everyone he meets (especially cute girls), Kira gets genuinely close to few, for various reasons. He tries to keep people at arm's length, partially in order to maintain his mysterious image and partially because he fears that people who get too close to him will be harmed somehow. Kira never shows his inner doubts to the outside world, instead always appearing as confident and in control. . .although that's one of the few things that actually remains consistent. Kira enjoys drinking, smoking and womanizing, and dislikes authority or being told what to do. Although he is very intelligent, he acts much like juvenile deliquent, his rebellious nature and his love of books often clashing. His likes to make jokes, as well, although his sense of humor can be both juvenile and obnoxious or dry and sarcastic, depending on the instance. To the few people he does get close to, he is very loyal and extremely protective, even in ways that aren't immediately obvious. He can actually be quite soft in many ways, but tries very hard to hide that from everyone, even to the point of denying it to himself. Sakuya can also be quite philosophical, and likes contemplating religious or ethical matters. He is highly observant, and likes offering his observation to other people because he believes they make him seem wise. He often seems somehow older than he is. Kira's emotional state runs the gamut from genuinely happy to utterly despondent, although most often he seems to strike a thoughtful balance between the two.
History
Sakuya's life was normal enough until his mother died in a car accident when he was seven. Sakuya, who was in the car with her when the accident happened and nearly died himself, blamed himself for his mother's death and began pushing away from his father, not wanting anyone's protection lest they meet the same fate as his mother. As Sakuya got older, despite being from a wealthy family (his father was an extremely successful lawyer), his behavior got more an more difficult, and he was drinking, smoking, swearing at his father, sleeping around and generally behaving in ways that could only be described as 'completely out of line' -- he lost his virginity in middle school, had experimented with various different recreational drugs by the end of his freshman year, ditched class and joined a gang. When he was 15, he met, and fell in love with -- or perhaps more accurately, grew obsessed with -- a beautiful girl named Alexiel. However, she soon vanished, and Sakuya was devastated by the loss, at once dedicated to trying to find her and becoming even more rebellious and difficult to handle. At 16, Sakuya's father, becoming increasingly worried by his son's poor behavior and thinking that Sakuya needed to be "straightened out", decided that Woodgrove Academy was the perfect place to send a wayward teenage boy, away from the apparent hazards of public school.
